Direct Measurement of the Atmospheric Muon Energy Spectrum with IceCube
نویسنده
چکیده
Data from the IceCube detector in its 22string configuration (IC22) were used to directly measure the atmospheric muon energy spectrum near the horizon. After passage through more than 10 km of ice, muon bundles from air showers are reduced to single muons, whose energy can be estimated from the total number of photons registered in the detector. The energy distribution obtained in this way is sensitive to the cosmic ray composition around the knee and is complementary to measurements by air shower arrays. The method described extends the physics potential of neutrino telescopes and can easily be applied in similar detectors. Presented is the result from the analysis of one month of IC22 data. The entire event sample will be unblinded once systematic detector effects are fully understood.

Muons in IceCube
The IceCube detector allows for the first time a measurement of atmospheric muon and neutrino energy spectra from tens of GeV up to the PeV range. The lepton flux in the highest energy region depends on both the primary cosmic ray composition around the “knee” and the contribution from prompt decays of mostly charmed hadrons produced in air showers. It is demonstrated here that a direct measure...
متن کاملMeasurement of the atmospheric ν μ spectrum with IceCube 59
The energy spectrum of the atmospheric muon neutrino flux was measured with the IceCube detector in the 59-string configuration, using an unfolding procedure. This measurement extended IceCube’s reach for atmospheric neutrinos up to 1PeV in energy. This extension in energy was obtained by using a machine learning algorithm preceeded by a dedicated feature selection for event selection, and by a...

متن کاملThe energy spectrum of atmospheric neutrinos between 2 and 200 TeV with the AMANDA-II detector
The muon and anti-muon neutrino energy spectrum is determined from 2000–2003 AMANDA telescope data using regularised unfolding. This is the first measurement of atmospheric neutrinos in the energy range 2–200 TeV. The result is compared to different atmospheric neutrino models and it is compatible with the atmospheric neutrinos from pion and kaon decays. No significant contribution from charm h...
